SAT Essay - 8 Ways To Write A Great Introduction

You can't afford to have writer's block since you only have 25 minutes to write your SAT Essay. So to help my students put pen to paper faster I created these 8 techniques for creating a compelling introduction quickly. Try them and they'll help you too.

1. Understand the prompt first

The number one thing you must do to write a great introduction is to make sure you know what you are writing about first. The biggest mistake I've seen in scoring SAT Essays is that many students misread the prompt. To avoid this I have my students underline or circle important words and phrases to make sure they have truly digested the prompt. I suggest you do the same.

2. Use an analogy or metaphor

Analogies require creativity. A trait that SAT Essay graders love to reward. For an essay in which the prompt was "Is it true that to make progress people must make sacrifices?" A student created the following analogy,

"To climb a mountain a person must struggle and strain. And this is the case with any worthwhile goal..."

3. Tell a brief anecdote

You can create an engaging introduction by telling a brief (1-2 sentence anecdote) such as the following.

When I trained for my first marathon it was difficult and often painful. But I wanted to have the accomplishment of running 26.2 miles so I did it anyway. To make progress in life requires sacrifice.

4. Use a quote that was not used in the prompt

It is useful to memorize quotes that you love. You never know when they can come in handy on the test. For example for the essay topic "Do mistakes lead to growth?" one of my students wrote

Someone once asked Edison, "how can you feel good about your work, having failed nine-hundred and ninety-nine times to make a light bulb?" To this Edison replied, "I have not failed so many times, I have merely learned nine-hundred and ninety-nine ways not to make a light bulb. Why did Edison react this way? Because he knew that mistakes are always experiences that lead to learning and growth."

This was a great quote to begin his essay with and would definitely impress SAT Essay graders.

5. Mention a topic in the news

SAT Essay Experts will often say to stay away from news in the body of your essay. And they are right. However, in the introduction it can be very useful IF you have the facts straight AND it's even better if it is a news story that isn't well covered. If you use this idea make sure it clearly fits the topic.

6. Make up an anecdote using very specific details

I don't recommend this as you don't need a creative introduction badly enough to take the trouble to make one up. I had a student insist on trying this and his were so bad at first anyone could guess they were fictional. Finally, however he started to put details that were so specific that I couldn't tell if it was real or not. So you can fool graders if you want to but I don't recommend it.

7. Use a cliche in an inventive way

Most books and articles on writing say to stay away from cliches however, it's a secret of professional writers that if you change a cliche it captures people's attention.

One student used the following cliche to make a great introduction for the topic "Which is a better indicator of a person's true character, their actions or their words?"

"A picture tells a thousand words" is a saying that applies to the newspaper industry but which also applies to people. The picture created by a person's actions tells us a thousand words about him or her and goes much farther than words do in telling us about a person's true thoughts and feelings. Several examples from literature and history demonstrate this point.

Using the cliche "A picture tells a thousand words" to make the point that actions speak louder than words is very unique and very powerful.

8. When all else fails just do a quick summary of what you will cover in your essay

Make sure you clearly state your thesis and state which categories of information your examples are from

For example, "Examples from history, literature and science will prove that people care far too much about what others think of them."

Most of all remember, you do not need to write an impressive introduction so badly that you sacrifice the rest of your essay. In fact I taught my students to write great body paragraphs first as these are just as important. Then when they could write them quickly I taught them how to write great introductions and powerful conclusions.

No matter how confident you may be, the experience of entering a room full of strangers can be nerve-racking and leave you grasping for something to say. I believe the best route is actually the easiest - we all know that people like talking about themselves, so why not ask questions designed to draw them out a little more than standard shop talk?

Here are a selection I have found to be useful in establishing a connection with someone who at first glance appears to have nothing in common with me at all.

1. How did you come to be in your line of work? Often people fall into their job through a chance encounter or a stroke of luck - these stories are often interesting, and recounting them will bring your new contact alive in a way that a straightforward discussion about current business never does.

2. Describe to me your dream customer. You will learn much about their motivation and goals by listening carefully to this.

3. What changes are happening, or can you predict happening, within your industry? Tap into a source of inside information here - it may well have implications for your own business or give you ideas on doing things differently. It is easy to get into habitual patterns of thought without realising it. A totally different perspective can really sharpen you up.

4. What do you regard as your greatest achievement in business to date? Another great way of breaking the ice and getting to know someone better.

5. What do you love about your work? Someone else's business will come alive for you if you listen to them describing their favourite activities.

6. Are there things you wish you could change? A natural follow-on from the above.

7. How would you like people to describe your contribution to your industry? This gets away from day-to-day business and allows them to discuss their deeper aspirations if they wish.

Any of these questions will provide you with a more enjoyable and memorable encounter, and with luck will ensure you are remembered likewise.

Writing activity progress notes can be time consuming but it is an important aspect of documentation. F-tag 248 clearly states that there must be a method in which each resident's program of activities is monitored. There are many ways to complete progress notes. Below are two examples of a quarterly progress note.

Since her admission on 10/9/01, Mrs. X has pursued an active leisure lifestyle. She is alert and oriented to all realms and makes her needs known. She is sociable with both staff and peers and initiates conversations. Her family members are very supportive and visit weekly, providing additional reading materials and Mrs. X's favorite foods. Mrs. X is an active participant in daily recreational activities both on and off the unit including exercise programs, adapted physical games (bowling, basketball, ball games), word games, bingo, trivia, discussion, Beauty groups, music programs, cooking and crafts. Mrs. X also joined the Resident Council and has attended 1x this quarter. She has been invited to attend the Young Adult Group, however has declined. She enjoys going to the greenhouse for horticultural therapy sessions and the off unit special events. Although a practicing Roman Catholic, Mrs. X states she finds much strength in attending chapel services of all faiths. Mrs. X enjoys a variety of independent activities including: talking on the phone in her room, listening to music on her Walkman (country and 50-80's music), reading large print books, crossword puzzles and watching movies in her room. Recreation Staff provides movies, crossword puzzles and large print reading materials. Mrs. X has episodes of tearfulness and often dwells on her illness. Recreation staff encourages her to pray, listen to favorite music, or find solace in the greenhouse if Mrs. X does not express interest in joining the group activity. Recreation staff will continue to invite Mrs. X to daily recreational activities and provide supplies for independent pursuits. In addition, Mrs. X will be encouraged to attend the Young Adult Group to spend time with residents of her age group for additional support and companionship. Mrs. P remains alert with confusion and forgetfulness. She is oriented to self and her speech is limited. She responds to simple direct questions by nodding her head or mumbling. Mrs. P is OOB daily in a recliner chair and spends much of the day in the dayroom where she is engaged in recreational activities including Snoezelen, Five Alive, Sensory and Movement, Music Therapy and adapted reminiscing groups. R/t to poor cognitive status, Mrs. P requires extensive assistance (i.e. hand over hand, physical/verbal cueing) to participate in leisure programs. R/t contractures of both arms she is provided with U/E and L/E PROM during adapted physical games and exercise programs to maintain physical functioning. During sensory programs, a variety of Recreational techniques are utilized to elicit responses to stimuli including: Aromatherapy for olfactory stimulation; hand massages, textured objects and props (yarn) for tactile stimulation; pictures of interest (cats) fiber optic lights and bubble towers for visual stimulation; ice cream, pudding, flavored lip balms etc. for gustatory stimulation; and music (Italian and singalong) as well as nature sounds, for auditory stimulation. Mrs. P responds to sensory stimulation by tracking objects, vocalizing, smiling, laughing, humming, and tapping feet and hands. She especially enjoys Italian music and the song "O Solo Mio". She also participates in discussion and reminiscence groups when asked closed-ended questions. Recreation staff provides one to one sensory programs PRN. Family visits are irregular. Recreation staff will continue to provide sensory stimulation to enhance responses to external stimuli and maintain quality of life. MS Excel is a powerful tool for crunching statistics. You may want to learn how to calculate the coefficient of variation, which is simply the standard deviation divided by the mean. Here how:

1. First, isolate a range of cells who coefficient of variation you want to know. For this example, let's assume that the data who coefficient of variation you want to calculate is in cells A2:A20.

Here is how to choose which of the four functions for calculating variance in Excel:

1. Use =VAR() when you are basing your calculation on a sample and you want Excel to ignore logical (TRUE/FALSE) values and text.

2. Use =VARA() when you are basing your calculation on a sample and you want Excel to treat logical values as TRUE=1, FALSE=0 and to interpret text values as numbers. Note: this formula will cause an error if the range of cells you select contains text that cannot be interpreted as a number.

3. Use =VARP()when you are basing your calculation on the entire population and you want Excel to ignore logical (TRUE/FALSE) values and text.
